Guardian of the Flame

Artscape Theatre, Cape Town: 15-18 September 2005
Artscape Opera House, Cape Town: 29 November to 2 December 2006
With Sibongile Khumalo, Janine Neethling, Tsepho Mngoma, Tandile Mandela, Savitri Naidoo, Stella Magaba, Neo Muyanga, Tina Schouw and Heather Mac.

Guardian of the Flame looks to extend the parameters of the artistic relationships that had evolved during previous productions, further developing the contemporary dance and theatre training and acrobatic and circus skills learned during the making of Moya Wa Sechaba and Rain in a Dead Man's Footprints. It's a song and dance show utilising original South African and African compositions that enables the core of burgeoning choreographers within the company to be involved in the development process.

Jazzart artistic director Alfred Hinkel recognised the potential that existed in the musical dynamic between Khumalo, Mngoma, Muyanga and Mandela, and used the dance company as the catalyst to exploit this creative source.

"What once might have been considered as "other" belonging to another group, foreign, and unknown, is now being integrated into the contemporary dance experience, sometimes being celebrated in its own right, and at other times being fused with other traditions, creating something new ... Again, one is struck by the world class talent, by young people learning their craft alongside veteran performers, by the respect the artists clearly have for each other and by the artistic possibilities that are now ours to harvest with the advent of a post- apartheid order."
