Since inception, Jazzart has subscribed to the conviction that the arts should be used as an educational tool. The Company therefore has a long legacy of presenting lecture demonstrations in schools, which it does annually. The creative team devised a programme based on its successful lecture demonstrations covering the Jazzart teaching methodology. Presented at schools and in local communities by Jazzart trainees, this programme educates learners about contemporary dance, while highlighting personal values and life skills for learners.
The Outreach Programme is core to the formal Training Programme as well as the part-time Dance Joint initiative. Outreach is entrenched within the curriculum framework, is structured and has identifiable outcomes. The Outreach Programme embodies a cornerstone of Jazzart’s philosophy - to use dance as a transformative tool within the flexible pathways connecting rural and urban settings. The Programme provides creative arts intervention and training to 300 000 young people each year. Core to the Outreach Programme is an opportunity of both give to and receiving from the communities involved.
The vision of Jazzart is to transform people’s lives, and the lives of its members, using the language of dance to:
1. stage annual festivals/performances to be a catalyst amongst divergent communities
2. establish long term relationships with stakeholders in communities by acknowledging and honouring the lengthy process of an engaged outreach practice
3. develop audiences invested in social transformation and Jazzart’s artistic expression of this
4. produce arts practitioners who inspire their audiences and students through their creative, saleable skills output.
